Meanwhile I am already in Berlin for three days. The following 5 months I will study ‘Business Communication Management’ at the Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Technik. I write this blog in English, because it is an assignment for school where I can earn 2 EC’s.
On Thursday the 8th of March I left my home together with my dad, mum and Wim to travel to Berlin. Within 8 hours we arrived at my new home. Right now I live in a student flat on the eastside of Berlin. My room looks perfectly fine; I even have my own kitchen and bathroom. After we unpacked all my stuff we did some groceries. Within an hour we had finished, so we decided to go into town.
We went to Alexander Platz, where you can find the Fernsehturm. We went in the tower to have an amazing view over the city. Afterwards we had dinner at a nice restaurant at the Alexander Platz. It was a nice day!
The second day we had a lot of stuff planned to do. Wim and I went by bike to the hotel of mum and dad to take the tram from their place. In Holland it is very common to use one bike by two persons at the same time; for people in Germany we were a sight. We already got some weird looking faces from people passing by, when we were nearly at hotel we heard a man shouting at us. It happened to be a police officer. He told us it was not usual to go by bike like we did. Luckily the man had a good sense of humor and he was not officially on duty, so he had a good laugh and let us go. It was such a relief and very funny afterwards! I have been in a situation like this before in England. It just seems that it is not normal at all to use a bike by two people at the same time abroad, because a bike is seen as sports equipment and not as a means of transport.
After a nice start of the morning we went by tram to Friedrischstraße to visit the Brandenburger Tor and the Reichstag building. Despite the fact that I have seen it before, it still amazes me. I am especially interested in the history of the city. We also went to the Jewish monument. This was very impressive. Afterwards we had lunch and we went to the DDR museum.
I had not been here before, so I was very curious how they showed everyday life in the DDR. There were a lot of things to see. They showed objects used by people in the DDR, like the Trabant, food and toys. They also showed the censor in the media during that time. Furthermore, they recreated the way a house must have looked like in the DDR. It was very interesting!
In addition, we also wanted to see a piece of the Berlin wall. We went by the underground to Bernauerstraße where we could find a big piece of the wall. It was (again) very impressive and it is hard to imagine how life must have been until 1989.
After a lot of sightseeing, we went for dinner to a fun restaurant. We were all very tired, so we decided to go back to the hotel/home early.
This morning mum, dad and Wim left. I went cleaning my room, because it was a bit dusty. I also did some groceries for dinner tonight.
It were some busy, but very nice days here in Berlin! A good start for the next 5 months!
